Keeping your home comfortable year-round is a priority for Kiwi families, and heat pumps are the perfect solution. They provide efficient heating in winter and cooling in summer and can even improve air quality. For many homeowners, the Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant makes this essential upgrade more affordable than ever.

If you’ve been considering a heat pump, now is the perfect time to learn how this grant could help.

What Is the Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant?

The Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant is a government-funded initiative to make New Zealand homes warmer, drier, and healthier. By subsidising the cost of insulation and heating, it reduces the financial barriers to creating a more comfortable home.

Since the programme launched, more than 150,000 installations have been completed across Aotearoa. In August 2023, eligibility criteria expanded, meaning 58,000 more homeowners can now apply. The grant covers up to 80% of the cost of heat pumps, wood burners, or pellet burners, with some families receiving additional funding to reduce costs further.

Why Install a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps are one of the most versatile and energy-efficient home improvements you can make.

  • Comfort All Year: Provides heating in winter and cooling in summer.
  • Cost Savings: Uses less energy than traditional heating systems, lowering power bills.
  • Healthier Homes: Filters allergens, dust, and pollutants to improve air quality.
  • Eco-Friendly: Reduces your home’s carbon footprint.

Are You Eligible for the Grant?

To qualify for a heat pump grant, you’ll need to meet these criteria:

  1. Your home was built before 2008.
  2. You own and live in the home.
  3. You hold a Community Services Card or live in a deprivation 7-10 area where additional support is available.
  4. You don’t already have an operational fixed heater (e.g., heat pump or wood burner) in your living area.
