DIY Tips to Keep Your Home Warm this Winter

Now that autumn is here, it's time to start preparing for the colder and wet winter months ahead. We know how cold and damp older Kiwi homes can be, so we have pulled together a list of DIY actions to help keep your whare warm and cosy this winter:

  1. Seal The Drafts: If you have wooden or tiled floors, combat drafts with door snakes. They sit along the bottom of your door and can prevent cold air from seeping in and warm air from escaping.
  2. Rug It Up: Again, if you have wooden floors, laying down rugs can help make a world of difference in keeping your home cosy. They add a touch of softness and also act as an extra layer of insulation, helping to retain heat.
  3. Let the Sun Shine In: Trim any trees or shrubs that block the sun from reaching your windows. Sunlight is nature's free heating system, so let the sun's warmth and sunshine into your home during daylight hours.
  4. Upgrade Your Curtains: Invest in lined curtains to keep the warmth inside and the cold out. Thick, insulating curtains create an additional barrier against drafts and help to trap heat inside your home.
  5. DIY Double Glazing: Consider applying window insulation film to your windows to create an additional barrier against cold drafts. This transparent film is easy to install and helps to reduce heat loss.
