Why Older Kiwi Homes Need Insulation Upgrades

It's no secret that we have some beautiful old houses here in Aotearoa.

From bungalows, villas, and Art Deco homes to the state houses of the 40s, 50s, and 60s, many were built with solid bones that stand strong today. Unfortunately, many were constructed without insulation, so they are draughty, struggle to retain heat, and can become damp in the winter.

In 1977, regulations regarding insulation were introduced to address the challenges posed by cold weather and to enhance living conditions. These regulations ensured that all new homes were equipped with insulation in ceilings, walls, and floors. However, there were no provisions for pre-existing houses.

Houses constructed before the 1970s typically lack insulation in the walls, although retrofitting may have occurred in the ceiling and floor. For homes built between 1979 and 2007, insulation was installed during the build, but may not meet present-day standards.

By October 2008, a significant change was implemented nationwide, requiring all new homes and major extensions to adhere to updated insulation standards. These standards underwent further updates in 2021.

If you live in a rental property, the Healthy Homes Standards has put in place requirements for insulation and heating.

Thankfully, support is available for homeowners looking to upgrade their insulation. The Warmer Kiwi Homes insulation grant offers subsidies of up to 80-100% for insulation upgrades, making it easier for Kiwis to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of their homes.

Thanks to the Warmer Kiwi Homes heating grant, homeowners may also be eligible for substantial discounts on heating upgrades too. Say goodbye to inefficient wood burners and oil heaters! Eligible households are encouraged to upgrade their heating solutions by installing efficient heat pumps. With the Warmer Kiwi Homes grant, you could receive discounts covering 80-100% of the costs.

Am I Eligible?
